Save the 8th has issued the following statement on the appointment of Minister Josepha Madigan to lead the Taoiseach’s “YES” campaign in the abortion referendum:
“We congratulate Minister Madigan on her appointment. She has a challenging job, selling a proposal that the Taoiseach himself has said at various times will “hurt women” and “lead to abortion on demand”.
She also has the unenviable task of checking every morning with the Tánaiste, to see what his new positions on the referendum will be on a given day. And of course, she will have to sell UK-style abortion on demand to a country that has never given any indication that it would support such a proposal.
We also take this opportunity to commiserate with Regina Doherty.
As the Minister herself might say, sure there’s always next time”.
